The Influence of Parent and Teacher Autonomy Support on Academic Engagement in Adolescents: The Mediating Role of the Need for Competence and Self-Control
Jo Yun-Ye

Lee Eun-Hee
Abstract
This study examined the influence of parent and teacher autonomy support on academic engagement in adolescents, and the mediating role of adolescent need for competence and self-control. A survey was administered to 800 students from 6 elementary schools and 4 middle schools in the Yeoungnam area. Structural equation modeling analyses indicated that while parent autonomy support did not directly affect academic engagement in adolescents, teacher autonomy support did. Adolescent need for competence and adolescent self-control each independently mediated the relationship between parent and teacher autonomy support and academic engagement. Additionally, there was a serial mediation effect of adolescent need for competence and self-control in relation to parent and teacher autonomy support and academic engagement. These results suggests that satisfaction with need for competence indirectly influences academic engagement through sequential mediation by improving self-control. This study has implications for the prevention and treatment of academic engagement problems in adolescents.
